Préparation Masai Mara

How much does a Masai Mara safari cost in 2026?

A three-day Masai Mara safari by road starts at about $780 per person, and a flying safari at about $2,450. Here is where the money goes, and how to tell a fair quote from a cheap one.

The Masai Mara safari cost you see quoted online can differ by a factor of five for what looks like the same trip. Three days, two nights, game drives, meals. The difference is almost always in four things: how you get there, where you sleep, when you go, and whether the park fee is in the price at all.

This guide breaks those down with real numbers from our own trips, so you can read any quote and know what you are paying for.

Kenya residents pay a lower park fee, which is why our three-day Mara safari by road is also offered at KES 72,000 per person for residents.

The reserve fee

The Masai Mara National Reserve is run by Narok County, and the entry fee is charged per person for every 24 hours you spend inside. It rose sharply in 2024 and 2025, with a higher rate for visitors from abroad in the busy second half of the year. On a three-day trip it can be a third of the total.

Rates change by county notice, so check the current figure with your operator on the day you book. Every price on our site includes it.

The Mara Triangle, the western part of the reserve, is managed separately by the Mara Conservancy and has its own entry arrangement. If your camp is on that side, your fee is paid there.

The vehicle and the guide

A safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, fuel for the long road from Nairobi and a guide who drives it for three days is the second largest cost. Shared vehicles are cheaper. A private vehicle costs more but lets you stay at a sighting as long as you like, which matters more than people expect.

Where you sleep

This is where prices spread out most.

  • Budget camps outside the reserve gates: simple tents, shared dining, sometimes a long drive in each morning.
  • Mid-range tented camps: private bathrooms, hot water, good food, close to the reserve. Most of our road safaris use these.
  • Luxury lodges and conservancy camps: small, quiet, with fewer vehicles at each sighting. Our guide to the best private camps in the Masai Mara covers the ones worth the rate.

Getting there

By road, Nairobi to the Mara takes about five to six hours, the last stretch on a rough road. By air, it is about 45 minutes from Wilson Airport to an airstrip inside the reserve. Flying adds cost but gives you back most of a day at each end. Our flying safari is built around that.

How the season changes the Masai Mara safari cost

July to October is peak season. The herds of the Great Migration are usually in the Mara, and so is everyone else. Camp rates are highest then, and the best camps fill early.

January and February are a close second: dry, green and busy over the holidays.

April and May, in the long rains, are the cheapest months. Some camps close. Those that stay open can be 30 to 40 per cent cheaper, and the resident lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant have not gone anywhere. Our guide to the best time to visit Kenya goes through the year month by month.

What is usually included, and what is not

A fair Mara safari quote should include:

  1. Transport from Nairobi and back, by road or by air
  2. The reserve fee for every day inside
  3. All game drives with a professional guide
  4. Accommodation and all meals on safari
  5. Drinking water in the vehicle

Usually not included:

An elephant wanders through the golden savanna grass, silhouetted against the brilliance of the setting sun.
  1. International flights and your Kenya eTA
  2. Tips for guides and camp staff
  3. Drinks at the camp bar
  4. Optional extras, such as a hot air balloon flight or a village visit
  5. Travel insurance

A dawn balloon flight is the most popular extra. Budget for it separately.

How to lower your Masai Mara safari cost without ruining the trip

  • Travel in the shoulder months. Late June, early November and March often have lower rates and good game.
  • Share a vehicle. A group of four or six brings the cost per person down more than any discount.
  • Choose a camp near the gate. You lose little time and save on the room.
  • Stay longer, not in more places. Three nights in one camp costs less per night than moving every day, and you see more.
  • If you live in Kenya, ask for resident rates. Park fees for citizens and residents are a fraction of the non-resident fee.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Masai Mara expensive compared with other Kenyan parks?

It is one of the more expensive parks to enter, mainly because of the reserve fee. Parks such as Lake Nakuru and Amboseli cost less to enter and are closer to Nairobi.

How many days do I need in the Masai Mara?

Three days and two nights is the minimum that makes the long drive worthwhile. Four or five days lets you slow down and follow the animals rather than a schedule.

Can I pay the reserve fee in shillings?

Residents and citizens pay in shillings. Visitors from abroad are charged in US dollars. When you book with us, the fee is already in the price and we pay it at the gate.

Is a flying safari worth the extra cost?

If you have less than four days, usually yes. You swap two long road days for two short flights and spend that time watching animals instead.
