Amboseli vs Masai Mara is the question we hear most from people planning a first safari with only a few days. Both are among the best parks in Africa, and they are very different. One is about elephants and a mountain. The other is about big cats and wide open plains.

Amboseli: elephants and a mountain
Amboseli is a small, flat park on the Tanzanian border, with Kilimanjaro rising behind it. The mountain is in Tanzania, but the classic view is from Kenya.
The park is famous for its elephants. Families here have been studied for more than fifty years by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, and many of the older bulls carry large tusks. Because the landscape is open, you see them clearly and for a long time.
The swamps in the middle of the park stay green even in the dry season, which draws elephants, buffalo, hippo and a great many birds. Lion and cheetah are present, though not in the numbers you find in the Mara.
Choose Amboseli if:
- You have only two days
- Elephants are your favourite animal
- You want the Kilimanjaro photograph
- You prefer a shorter, smoother drive

The Masai Mara: big cats and the migration
The Mara is larger, wilder and busier with predators. Lion, leopard and cheetah are all seen regularly, and the open grassland makes hunts easier to follow.
From about July to October, the Great Migration arrives from Tanzania, with wildebeest and zebra in huge numbers and dramatic crossings of the Mara River. Our migration guide explains the timing.
Around the reserve are private conservancies with limits on vehicles, where you can also take guided walks and night drives.
Choose the Mara if:
- You have three days or more
- Big cats are high on your list
- You are travelling between July and October
- You want the classic open savannah

Amboseli vs Masai Mara on cost
When people weigh Amboseli vs Masai Mara on price, Amboseli usually wins. It is cheaper to reach, the drive is shorter, and the entry fee is lower. A two-night trip there often costs less than the park fees alone for three days in the Mara. The Mara reserve fee is one of the highest in Kenya and is charged for every 24 hours. Can you do both?
Yes, and many people do. The two parks are not close to each other, so the usual route goes back through Nairobi or uses a light aircraft between them.
A good plan is:
- Two nights in Amboseli
- Back to Nairobi, or a flight across
- Three nights in the Masai Mara
That gives you elephants and the mountain first, and the cats and plains second. Add Lake Nakuru or Ol Pejeta for rhino.

For a first safari of three or more days, choose the Masai Mara. The variety of wildlife is hard to beat.
For a short trip, or a second safari, choose Amboseli. It is easier to reach and the elephant encounters are unforgettable.

Which is better for a first safari, Amboseli or the Masai Mara?
For three days or more, the Masai Mara usually offers more variety, especially big cats. For a two-day trip, Amboseli is the better choice because it is closer.
Can you see the Big Five in Amboseli?
You can see elephant, buffalo and lion in Amboseli, and occasionally leopard. There are no rhino. For the full Big Five, the Mara combined with Lake Nakuru or Ol Pejeta is a better plan.
Is Amboseli worth it without seeing Kilimanjaro?
Yes. The elephants alone make it worth it. But plan game drives for early morning, when the mountain is most often clear.
How far is Amboseli from the Masai Mara?
They are on opposite sides of Nairobi. By road, the journey between them takes most of a day, so many travellers fly between the two.
